Packaging policies - cardboard is king!
Where possible, we avoid using plastics, vinyl, polythene, foam or polystyrene in our packaging. If the product is a spare part, and arrives with us without a bag, then that is precisely how we will ship it.
Our preferred method is to despatch items within cardboard boxes, padded out with recycled paper and sealed with paper packing tape. This packaging is easily and cheaply reused or recycled and is robust yet environmentally friendly.
As of February 2010, around 90% of orders will arrive as described above.
The remainder will normally ship inside grey mailing sacks. Our grey mailers are manufactured from 100% recycled films and contain a biodegradable additive. This makes the bags 100% degradable and they may be safely disposed of alongside your regular household rubbish.
For security in transit, a minority of our heaver items still require old-fashioned heavy duty vinyl tape. We are looking for an alternative and are currently experimenting with reinforced paper products.
We are not environmental activists, nor are we perfect, but we do feel that mail order companies should do their bit to minimise the landfill that our children and grandchildren will be required to deal with.
As innovators, we are used to our 'higher-profile' competitors copying our ideas, but we really don't mind if they steal this one - after all, we're sure they'll say they've followed our lead won't they?
