Medela SpecialNeeds® Feeder - Overview

The Medela SpecialNeeds® Feeder (designed by Mandy Haberman) has been shown to have many uses.Mandy Haberman's slit valve

Under health professional guidance, this feeder was initially designed for babies with nursing difficulties including children with cleft lip/palate, Down's syndrome and other neurological difficulties.

Nowadays, this bottle is recommended by the famous Baby Whisperer, Lynne Hogg, to help with other feeding difficulties.

This feeder enables you to adjust the milk flow to suit your baby’s sucking strength and appetite. The one-way valve prevents too much milk flowing into your baby’s mouth which may be overwhelming and distressing for your baby. You can also gently squeeze the teat to release a small amount of milk to encourage your baby to start sucking.

With its special design features, this feeder is uniquely responsive to your baby's nursing efforts, so whatever your baby’s sucking strength is, he/she will still get milk. None of your baby's sucking is wasted.

The SpecialNeeds Feeder may also reduce air-swallowing lessening the risk of your baby developing wind, vomiting and colic. This is because the special needs feeder has to have air expelled from the teat before it can be filled and given to your baby.

The Medela SpecialNeeds Feeder can also help with getting breast fed babies onto bottles. The feeding skill required to get milk from this feeder is the same as when breast feeding, as your baby still needs to work for their milk when sucking from this bottle.

Remember, when buying bottles for your baby it is always best just to buy one initially to see if it suits your baby.
